Safety Rules of the Road Curriculum
The safety unit has 30 insert cards with safety slogans to match the traffic signs used in the Healthy Rules of the Road kit. The same posters are now interchangeable for two units of study. The curriculum contains 5 lessons to develop a safe movement environment for your classroom using a traffic theme. An expansions page gives several ideas of how to extend the safe movement theme throughout the entire school community.
Healthy Rules of the Road Curriculum
The nutrition unit also contains 5 lessons incorporating the posters, pockets, inserts, and mini signs.
Each lesson introduces new methods of presenting nutrition knowledge by using a traffic theme. The children love using their imaginations to drive as cars and fill up their “fuel tanks” with the food groups. Classifying foods as red, yellow, and green light foods is a strong visual for the children to understand the different food groups. Activities such as nutrition bingo, traffic treasure hunt, and Healthy Highway centers are several of the many ideas stated in the curriculum. This is a theme that will grow each year.
Healthy Rules of the Road Posters
The kit contains 6 posters each representing an actual traffic sign. A healthy slogan matches each sign: Rule #1: traffic light - stop for healthy snacks Rule #2: one way – to 5 a day Rule #3: yield – watch out for oils, slow down on fats, pass by sugar Rule #4: stop – always eat breakfast Rule #5: do not enter – with junk food, soda, or candy Rule #6: crosswalk – be happy, be healthy, be strong. Once these rules are established, healthy traffic theme lessons explain how to use these posters to develop a nutrition rich curriculum.
Inserts and Pockets
By attaching clear plastic pockets to the posters you can have both interactive and interchangeable posters! Mini signs and healthy slogan inserts can be placed into the pockets thereby giving the students a hands-on activity with the healthy posters. By matching the traffic sign or key words allows immediate assessment of each student’s knowledge of the rules and healthy slogans
Mini Signs
24 mini signs can be used for many activities: bingo, memory, mix and match with healthy slogans. Movements can be connected with the signs as the children repeat the healthy slogans: e.g. skip and say: “Be happy, be healthy, be strong.”
Food Cards Food cards designd to create a vibrant visual for learning. Traffic light food cards are categorized into red, yellow, and green light foods based on the number of grams of fat found. Green light foods are "every day" foods = 0-5 grams of fat; Yellow light foods are "slow down and think" foods = 6-9 grams of fat; Red light foods are "stop and think" foods = 10 grams of fat and higher. Promotes easy classification of healthy foods. The fuel pump cards reinforce the pyramid food groups. These cards display pictures of foods from each food group, along with a label of the name of the food and the food group. Each card is framed with the corresponding color from each of the pyramid food groups. Promotes connection to the food pyramid and literacy.
Summary of Kit contents: 6 posters, 30 safety insert cards, 24 nutrition insert cards, 6 plastic pockets for inserts, 24 mini traffic signs, 4 "car" progress signs, 5 lesson plans for each unit and a Connection page with additional activites as well as ways to get families and school communities involved. Healthy Highway goes green! The carrying case that is used for the kit is made from recycled material and is 100% recyclable.
