WORKSHOPS With our children's health at risk, and research indicating that they may not live as long as their parents, the question arises as to how to implement a meaningful and timely program to help our children eat better and exercise more. Healthy Highway is the answer. Healthy Highway can be customized to accommodate the needs of schools, community organizations, and families. Over the past 5 years Healthy Highway has expanded to include the entire school population as well as before and after school programs. Family involvement has been met with rave reviews of the ease of talking about "fuels" and "traffic light" foods. (see sub pages for more information by clicking on icon on left )
These informative and interactive workshops create an easy to implement program based on educationally sound concepts and imagination. Participants will take part in activities demonstrating key elements of nutrition and exercise knowledge. Activities are designed to meet requirements of the Child Nutrition Act legislation.
Workshop 1: designed for those directly involved with the implementation of the program, i.e. Physical Education teachers, nurses, cafeteria directors, wellness coordinators, health care providers. Participants will: · Be introduced to actual lessons in the curriculum with discussion of the key elements for instruction. · Be shown how to use all materials in the kit. · Gain insight to the brain friendly activities incorporated in the lessons. · Perform the key nutrition slogans to gain insight to the importance of movement and brain function. · Perform several Healthy Highway activities. · Learn the progression of activities to solidify the Healthy Highway concepts. · Gain information on the ease of implementation of Healthy Highway into their current program. · Be given ideas to include the entire group population. · Learn how to make home connections. · Analyze how to quickly assess knowledge base of students.
Application of knowledge Participants will work together to take information from the above sessions and apply it to their own curriculum. "Teams" will discuss Healthy Highway concepts and create an actual lesson to implement into their current curriculum. Participants will leave with the confidence to start traveling down the "highway" as soon as they return to their schools. Workshop 2: designed for those who are in a supportive role of implementing the program, i.e. full school staff, administrators, families. There are two formats: A. A power point presentation will be shown highlighting the following areas: obesity facts; present legislation on child nutrition; benefits of the Healthy Highway program; outline of the “Knowledge Zone” – focus for the year; the goals for the program. B. More in depth program to follow up the power point presentation. Participants will: · Learn about the concepts of Healthy Highway. · Learn about the easy implementation into the participating group. · Be given tools to initiate the program. · Gain insight into how movement maximizes brain function. · Participate in Healthy Highway activity centers.
Upon completion of the workshop the participants will have an understanding of the focus of Healthy Highway and the knowledge required to support the implementation of the program. Participants will also earn their “learner’s permit” allowing them to help all members drive to the same destination, that of a strong and healthy body.
